Get connected to serve based on your availability, skill level, and serving preferences. Service opportunities are in Kent County, MI. FAQ's About Serving with VIS

VIS Friends: VIS partners with over 75 social service agencies, nonprofits, and health care organizations across Kent County, MI who refer community members to VIS when there are no other programs in the community to meet their needs and who would benefit from the support provided by a Christian volunteer.   We call these individuals “VIS Friends” and they can call VIS directly for 2 years requesting support before needing an updated referral. Most VIS Friends are hard-working neighbors experiencing barriers due to limited abilities, low-incomes, housing or food instability, health disparities or age-related declines.

Other Community Nonprofits: VIS has built wonderful partnerships with many nonprofits and community ministries across the county. We can help connect your group service project with other programs in town seeking support from volunteers.
Kent County: VIS focuses its ministry on serving community members, Christian churches and schools, and social service agencies in Kent County, MI.
Here are some common examples of serving opportunities:
  • Friendly Visitor
  • Household Chores
  • Minor Home Repairs
  • Mother’s Helper
  • Organizing
  • Packing
  • Special Projects
  • Transportation to medical appointments, the grocery store, or local food pantries
  • Yard Work
You will be serving as a volunteer of your local church, not a volunteer of VIS. Remember, VIS is passionate about equipping and mobilizing the church, the body of Christ, for works of service!  When a volunteer comes directly to VIS wanting to serve, we ask them to provide a reference from their local Christian church whom we call before connecting them to an opportunity to serve. Volunteers are asked to abide by all background check policies and liability waivers required by their local church before connecting with opportunities to serve through VIS.
